LISTEN TO IT

It’s been four years since the last “real” Ministry album came out- the last two releases were the “Greatest Fits” (2001) compilation and the amazing “Spinctour” (2002) live album. Frontman Al Jourgenson is a scary looking dude who you may have seen in the very crappy movie AI. Ministry is one of the few bands that has had the courage to buck the trends and create music that sounds like nothing else. Frontman Al Jourgenson leads the band according to an aesthetic that is the antithesis of pop – these songs get better the more you listen to them. In the early 90’s, Ministry hit the charts with “Psalm 69”, a manic paced industrial attack that was well accepted. With “Filth Pig” and “Dark Side of the Spoon” (99), more of the songs were slow and plodding, with samples and different instruments mixed together. The songs were also very long (close to 15 minutes) and repetitive as they slowly built layers of sound. This isn’t music for the casual listener, there are no melodies or hooks to latch onto.
