After picking up A Perfect Circle's new album "Thirteenth Step", I realized that I hadn't even considered the possibility that the album might not be great. That's the kind of confidence the musicians of APC inspire. Naturally, it was a great album.

"Thirteenth Step" finds singer Maynard Keenan at his most experimental vocals yet. The songs on this album are a little mellow compared to the first APC album, but the lyrics are very engaging. The album has almost an otherworldly feel to it.

"The Package" starts the album off with some very weird sounding vocals from Keenan, who mixes a catchy vocal rhythm with angry growling to good effect. "Blue" is an epic sounding rock song that's one of the heavier tracks, with an infectious chorus. Track six, "A Stranger" is the most raw song on the album, featuring acoustic guitar and a violin with Maynard's amazing vocals. Next up is "The Outsider", proclaiming "everyone will have their day to die" and ending with the hardest riffs on the album.

A Perfect Circle

I was surprised to see a cover of "The Nurse Who Loved Me" by Failure on the album. Unlike the original (kickass) version of this tune, this song isn't loud and it's even kinda funny. The best track is up next: "Pet" has heavy guitars and timely lyrics (try and read between the lines); I can't wait to hear this performed live. The final track slows it down to a relaxing melancholy with "Gravity".

The album cover has a message from the band requesting that you don't violate the copyrights of the album. Personally, with a band like this, where I know I'm gonna listen to it until my ears rot, I always buy the album. Like teeth, good bands go away if you don't take care of them. So do bad bands, by the way. So download the next "Papa Roach" album, and go out right now and buy "Thirteenth Step".
