Battlefield '42 MODs :Put Your Wallet Away

EA Games' Battlefield 1942 is easily the best multiplayer first-person shooter created to date. PC gamers have been waiting for a game like this since Wolfenstein 3D. The popularity of the game has so far spawned two expansion packs and a multitude of modifications. EA makes great games, and cool expansion packs. But what if a mod came along that blew them away, and didn't set your bank account back $40?

EA's Expansion Packs for Battlefields

Battlefield 1942

The Road to Rome
The Road to Rome focuses exclusively on the key Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII. This expansion pack features eight new vehicles. These include the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engine fighter-bombers as well as new Italian, British, and German tanks and anti-tank guns.

The new vehicles and weaponry in this expansion pack are extremely cool and definitely add more to the game. The best part about this expansion pack, though, is the MAPS! With more intricate road systems and varying terrain, Road to Rome's maps definitely create new battle situations.

Secret Weapons of World War II
Defeat your enemies with a variety of experimental firepower, including the Wasserfall Guided Rocket, the Natter Rocket Plane, and the revolutionary Rocket Pack. Drop from a cargo plane behind enemy lines and prepare for close combat with one-shot kill knives, new machine guns, and more. Give all of these weapons and vehicles a trial by fire on eight tough new battle maps.

Battlefield 1942

The vehicles added in this expansion pack are very cool looking, but they are not so fun to use. The lamest component to this pack is the new rocket backpack, which allows an individual soldier to take short flights. Thankfully, it's limited to only two per map, lest the battlefield be full of flying jackasses. I wasn't able to see a real tactical use for it, and it had the real potential to ruin battlefield realism.

Battlefield 1942

Desert Combat
Desert Combat is a modern day military modification to the popular war game BattleField1942 from EA. It is focused on conflicts in the middle-east within the last decade between the various nations, From Desert Storm to Somalia. Currently, only the Desert Storm campaign - featuring Coalition and Iraqi forces - is available. This war game is a total conversion for Battlefield1942 and is based on the same principles of a FPS and arcade style vehicle sim. It will be focused around multiplayer online gameplay and is expected to be free to the public.

Battlefield 1942This mod is the reason to buy Battlefields 1942. World War II units are very cool and EA did a great job on the original, but the Battlefields engine reaches it's peak with Desert Combat. The sheer speed and power of an M1 tank rolling over desert sand knocking out two Iraqi T-72 tanks in two shots beats the crap out of the slower, weaker armor of WWII. Apples and oranges maybe, but maybe not. The Desert Combat games tend to be faster paced because the vehicles have greater top speeds and faster rates of fire. Air power is a different experience also, with jet fighters and radar making for faster dogfights and more devastating bombings. Helicopters make their debut in DC, looking slick as hell and extremely deadly in the hands of an experienced pilot. Take all of these factors and add the fact that these armies are actually at war oversea at this very moment, and you have an essential gaming experience that doesn't cost you a dime.

Galactic Conquest

Battlefield 1942Battlefield: Galactic Conquest will put you in the role of an every day soldier in the Star Wars universe. You will be able to choose between the Galactic Civil war and The Clone Wars and fight by either means of Land or Air in many of the Vehicles you can see throughout the Star Wars universe.

Battlefield 1942This mod is still a work in progress, and it definitely shows. Some awkwardness with the walkers and spacecraft are apparent at this point, but the overall effort is top-notch. Star Wars fans can expect great things from this mod, but it's not quite there yet. It still has an "under construction" feel to it. Check back on this in a few months.

Eve of Destruction
The Indochina Vietnam Conflict 1946-1973

The "Eve Of Destruction" mod is a tribute to the U.S. , ARVN and Vietcong/NVA soldiers who fought and died in Vietnam, and also to the Vietnamese people.

Still in a very early state of construction, this mod has some very cool vehicles and jungle maps.Sniping will be a key element of EOD, as will booby trapped jungles and villages. The latest preview shows the mod looking just as authentic as Desert Combat. It'll be interesting to see whether this mod eclipses EA's soon to be released Battlefield: Vietnam .
